Requiem

'Requiem'
Honours Project 2011

-

‘Requiem’ was created for my 4th year Major Project at UTS. It is an exploration of a range of cultural and religious rituals surrounding death and an effort to demystify this topic.

The key inspiration of the visual theme came from ‘Day of the Dead’. The great Mexican print makers made hundreds of ‘Calaveras’ or ‘Dancers of Death’ that depict skeletons in everyday acts – working, drinking, dancing etc. The idea of presenting death in such a manner and from a celebratory point of view, opens up a highly taboo subject and transforms it into a less confronting topic. The exuberant nature of the Mexican graphic approach became an avenue in which a highly illustrative and textured response could be created.

All illustrations and layouts were completed by myself for this project.
